Did the planets really align and destroy ATM fees?

Over the last few months, YouTube has been abuzz with predictions for the end of the world. In fact, according to the conspiracy theorists, the 24th of September was going to be the very last day of the calendar, ever! Apparently, a biblical prediction had detailed the arrival of a mysterious “Planet X” whose sudden close proximity to Earth was about to lead to our total destruction! Needless to say, it didn’t.

However, it would seem that there were plenty of “believers” actually preparing for the ‘end of times’. Now, for me, hunkering down in a shipping container, buried in the backyard, wouldn’t seem the most sensible way of riding out a ‘total annihilation’ event, but who am I to argue. I’ve never done it before.

ATM fees

Anyway, I can’t help but think that this “predicted” calamitous event did, in fact, bring with it some good.

I for one am of the firm belief that the removal of ATM fees, announced by the CBA, exactly 7 days prior to the ‘scheduled rain of fire’ was motivated by far more than just their strong desire to help clients.

Those bank guys watch YouTube. They could see what was about to occur and I genuinely believe that this was actually CBA’s way of saying” thank you and goodbye”. Sure, call me an ‘old softy’, but do you recall another time a bank has removed a fee? Oh, and the message didn’t seem lost on the other banks either, as they immediately followed suit.

Now a lot of cynics out there are probably saying “big deal, they’re only really foregoing 7 days of in- come prior to our complete extinction, so it’s not really affecting their bottom line”. But you miss the point completely. Removing a fee, any fee, is actually reducing the competitiveness of our banks on the world stage. These aren’t the most profitable banks per capita for no reason!

And besides, can you imagine the amount of YouTube clips those bank executives would have had to sit through to arrive at the decision. They don’t just act on a whim you know.

Thanks for reading, see you next time. Homepage
